Prayer

I wrote this prayer a few years back and thought I would share it with you all, following some serious editing of course.

We confess to you, Lord, what we are:

We are not the people we like others to think we are; we are afraid to admit even to ourselves what lies in the depths of our souls.

We do not want to hide our true selves from you and believe that you know and love us as we are.

Help us not to shrink from self-knowledge; teach us to respect ourselves for your sake and give us the courage to put our trust in your guiding power. Deliver us from the paralysis of guilt and fear; provide us with the freedom and energy of forgiven people.

Give us discernment to know your will for us along with willingness to accept it, the courage and strength to live out your will. We need your help in each of these ways, for we cannot do any of them on my own. Give us what we need not what we want. No more. No less. May we live today with a heightened sense of your presence? May we catch glimpses of the eternal in all things? May we be aware of, and listen to, the promptings of your Holy Spirit. We place our lives completely and unreservedly in your hands, and trust that you will not let anything happen to us outside of your will for us.

This beautiful gift of life that you’ve given us that we take for granted so often. Thank you for the precious moments that we don’t acknowledge, the many blessings that you give us; In the midst of a world where there can be everything but peaceful, you offer us peace, and love. For that we are thankful. Amen.
